That said, relationship/marriage counseling is not typically covered by insurance companies. The reason? Insurance is set up as a way to determine payment based upon medical necessity. That means, a mental health diagnosis – such as depression or anxiety – that can be treated with a proven, therapeutic modality. Couple’s issues are not considered diagnosable as a medical necessity.
Additionally, most insurance panels do not cover sex therapy or sexual dysfunction issues. Research has shown that nearly 45% of all couples have experienced some issues related to sexual problems. These issues range from premature ejaculation to desire/libido challenges and understanding how to bring variety, such as kink, into their relationships. The therapeutic interventions for sexual health care can be pivotal for the well-being of a relationship. Unfortunately, these necessary sessions are not seen as medically necessary and not addressed/financed by insurance.
